Brite and LiPHY work together to develop the world's full integrated VLC SoC on SMIC’s process to address the increasing demand of embedded VLC function in standard LED lighting to support various advanced applications.
Dr. C. Patrick Yue, a board member of Brite Semiconductor and Professor at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), was elected as a 2020 Fellow of The Optical Society (OSA) “for contributions to the advancement of visible light communication and optical fiber communication system-on-chip design based on silicon technologies”.
Founded in 1916, OSA is the leading professional association in optics and photonics, home to accomplished science, engineering, and business leaders from all over the world. Fellow membership in OSA is limited to no more than 10% of the membership and is reserved for members who have served with distinction in the advancement of optics and photonics.
With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Yue is one of China’s foremost experts in the research and development of semiconductors and a Fellow at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). In 2015, Dr. Yue was appointed as a board member of Brite Semiconductor and with his deep understanding of the technical needs of both Chinese and American customers, Patrick brought significant value to Brite’s board and enhanced company’s technical capabilities.
Visible Light Communication technology, better known as VLC and Li-Fi, utilizes visible light wavelength in the range of 380-740 nm as a communication medium. VLC technology implements light-emitting diodes (LEDs) from a number of sources such as monitors, indoor and outdoor lighting, television, and other consumer electronic devices for the purpose of communication.
The VLC technologies have been commercialized by a startup LiPHY Communications Ltd. (Hong Kong) founded by Prof. Yue and his PhD student Babar Hussain. LiPHY has demonstrated its product and services at various top international trade shows including the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the Tokyo Lighting Show, and the Light+Building Frankfurt Lighting Fair, and LiPHY will also showcase its newest products in the upcoming 2020 CES in Las Vegas (booth 60500 at Tech East, LVCC, South Plaza).
Brite Semiconductor has been working closely with LiPHY to develop the world's full integrated VLC SoC to address the increasing demand of embedded VLC function in standard LED lighting to support various advanced applications including high-precision indoor positioning and secured, far-detection QR code using light (LiQR) and location-based data access. The cooperation on IoT SoC design has pushed Brite’s design service to a high level and Brite’s mature design service capability provides strong technical support for LiPHY’s technology development.
